On February 26, 2020, I introduced the Sex Selective Abortion Act (Bill C-233) in the House of Commons. If passed, the bill would amend the Criminal Code to prohibit a medical practitioner from performing a sex selective abortion. The bill includes a directive for guidelines to be established on how information on the prohibition on sex selective abortion is provided by a medical practitioner to a pregnant person.
Sex selective abortion happens in Canada. It is not permissible in a society that advocates for equality of the sexes. Adopting appropriate legislation to end discrimination against any person based on sex is part of Canada’s commitment to advancing human rights. My bill addresses inequality between the sexes in its earliest forms.
I encourage you to visit this page for all the information you need on my bill as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
Cathay Wagantall, MP
Yorkton--Melville
